The motivation of the design is to upcycle the plastic waste to be used in constructing roads. In the Philippines, only 14% of the roads is paved with concrete or asphalt. With the projected need to construct and rehabilitate roads in Iloilo in the upcoming years, the plastic waste can be utilized as an additive in the road mixture. Plastic waste needs to first be collected, whether it be employing locals to collect waste from the roads and water, or incentivising locals to return their consumed sachets upon their visit to purchase additional sachets. The collected plastic would be manually segregated by the locals and cleaned using a machine, such as one of Herbold’s VWE pre-washing units. The plastic waste would then be shredded by a machine, such as the Untha’s plastic shredder. At this stage, the team has decided to use the MRF as the facility for the collection, segregation, cleaning, and shredding plastic. Upon obtaining shredded plastic, it can be used in the mixture to construct roads. Constructing roads with plastic is already being done in India, another country that faces the issue of plastic waste. There is an Indian patent that details the process to produce a mix of waste plastics, aggregate, and bitumen, which can be used in roads. The patent illustrates feasibility to replace bitumen by weight part for plastic. As a result, there is improved road condition as plastic roads are able to withstand increased load, abrasion, and resistance to water. With the improved properties of road condition, one negative aspect of this design is the favoured road type. In the Philippines, concrete roads are chosen over asphalt. As a result, the team needs to identify and confirm whether there is enough demand for asphalt roads to be constructed as the Indian patent only outlines feasibility with asphalt roads. If this design is pursued, the team plans to work alongside with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to approve the use of plastic waste as an additive in future road projects. Constructing and maintaining the roads are the responsibility of respective government areas. For example, as the project is based in Iloilo, the team needs to work with the local government and respective construction contractor. The user will continue to be the locals as the team plans to focus on building roads locally near Iloilo. The client would be responsible for purchasing the plastic to be used for road construction.
