WORLD VISION SOCIAL INNOVATION COMPETITION
OFFICIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
The World Vision Social Innovation Challenge (the “Competition”) is sponsored by World Vision Canada (“WVC”) and is a student entrepreneurship challenge that aims to support some of Canada’s most brilliant minds in creating market-based solutions to some of the world’s most difficult development challenges.
This is a two-round Competition that will allow teams of 2 to 5 people (each a “Team”) to demonstrate market-based solutions to some of the world’s most difficult development challenges that will be faced over the next 5 to 10 years, regarding energy.
By participating in this Competition, every Team and member accepts these Rules and agrees to abide by and be bound by them.
START AND END DATES
For the Preliminary Round of the Competition, WVC will post on: http://challenge.worldvision.ca (“Online Challenge Platform Site“), an online challenge statement explaining a development challenge that will need to be addressed in over the next 5 to 10 years.
The Preliminary Round starts at 12:00 a.m. EST on September 19, 2016 and closes at 8:00 p.m. EST on March 10, 2017 (“Preliminary Round Close Date”). After the Preliminary Round Close Date, 8 Teams will be identified as finalists (“Finalists”).
The Final Round will be a one day face-to-face pitch event and will be held in June, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario (“Final Round Pitch”). Due to the expansion of the competition, the exact date and venue is to be determined. After the Final Round Pitch, 1 (one) Finalist team will be selected as the winner (“Winning Team”) and 1 (one) Finalist team will be selected as the runner up (“Runner Up Team”).
HOW TO ENTER
In order to become an entrant, a Team must agree to these Rules and fill out the entry form available at the Online Challenge Platform Site. A successfully completed and submitted form is an “Entry”. In these Rules, a Team that has submitted an Entry to the Competition is referred to as an “Entrant”.
Each Finalist team must submit 1 business plan of 15 to 20 PowerPoint slides in PDF format (“Business Plan”). All members of each Finalist team must attend the Final Round Pitch.
Individuals may only join one Team. Only one Entry per Team. Multiple Entries will be disqualified. Fraudulent Entries will be declared invalid. All Entries must be submitted online; no paper Entries will be accepted.
To submit an Entry for the Competition and be eligible to win a Prize:
- Each member of a Team must, at the date of Entry, be:
- a legal resident of any Canadian province or territory;
- a full-time or part-time student (minimum grade 11), or recent graduate (up to 2 years) who is registered at or attended a secondary school, university or college in any Canadian province or territory.
- Teams must:
- after the Preliminary Round Close Date, not add, remove, or replace any Team members;
- appoint a Team leader who will be the point-of-contact with WVC; and
- if a registered business, charity, non-profit organization, or social enterprise:
- not have received prior investment of more than $10,000;
- not have been in operation for more than 3 years; and
- bear the same name as that of such entity and shall not change its name during the course of the Competition.
The Competition is not open to employees of WVC, its affiliated organizations, advertising or promotional agencies or media partners, or members of the household of such employees.
8 Finalist teams will receive admission to an accelerator program that will help them develop their Entries into Business Plans throughout March, April, and May of 2017.
The Winning Team and Runner Up Team will receive respective contracts to work with WVC and access to further technical support and advisory services to incubate and market test their ideas for 12 months (“Awards”). The approximate value of the contracts will be dependent on the investment required to operationalize the Teams’ respective Business Plans up to a maximum of $30,000 (CAD) for the Winning Team and $20,000 (CAD) for the Runner Up Team.
The Award will be subject to the following terms and conditions:
- the Award is not negotiable, deferrable or transferable, and is not convertible to cash;
- each member (or, if under 19 years old, his/her parent/guardian) of the Winning Team and Runner Up Team must review and sign all necessary contract and policy documents including, but not limited to: WVC’s standard independent contractor agreement, child protection, health and safety, privacy and travel, and such other policy documents as may be deemed necessary by WVC’s People and Culture department, and provide authorization for a criminal background check, prior to receiving the Awards. If any member (or, if under 19 years old, his/her parent/guardian) of the Winning Team and/or Runner Up Team refuses to sign any of the documents specified above or does not pass the criminal background check, the Winning Team and/or and Runner Up Team will be disqualified and a replacement Winning Team and/or and Runner Up Team will be selected; and
- all work, data, material, documents, software, etc., in whole or in part, created by the Winning Team and Runner Up Team respectively pursuant to the Awards and/or Business Plan (“Work”) is their respective property. However, the Winning Team and Runner Up Team must agree to grant to WVC a worldwide, sub-licensable, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free license authorizing WVC to reproduce, disseminate and translate said Work.
SELECTION OF WINNERS
After the Preliminary Round Close Date, WVC and a team of industry experts (each a “Judge”, collectively “Judges” or “Judging Panel”) will assess the Entries and select up to 10 Finalist teams. The Judges shall be experienced entrepreneurs, investors and academics appointed by WVC in its sole discretion.
The core assessment of the Entries will focus on the innovativeness, feasibility and viability of the proposed solution.
All Entries will be evaluated by the Chair and co-Chairs of the Competition by using the common “Executive Summary Judging Criteria”.
The Chair and co-Chairs will hold a joint session where up to a maximum of 10 Entries will be identified as Finalists.
WVC will attempt to contact the designated member of each Finalist team by telephone within two weeks after the Preliminary Round Close Date. In the event that no member of a Finalist team can be contacted within two (2) weeks after the selections have been made, that Finalist team will be disqualified and an alternate Finalist team will be selected.
At the Final Round Pitch, Finalist teams will be provided an opportunity to present their Business Plans, which should explain the practicability of the plan execution and fundability potential.
Each Finalist team will conduct a 15 minute, uninterrupted Business Plan presentation in English followed by up to 12 minutes of question and answer and then 3 minutes of feed-back by the Judging Panel. It is not compulsory for all members of a Finalist team to address the Judging Panel in the presentation.
The Judges will make their evaluations and give their scores by using a common “Business Plan Judging Criteria”.
The Winning Team and Runner Up Team will be decided by the highest and second highest scores respectively after a joint deliberation of the Judging Panel.
WVC and Judges’ Discretion
The decisions of the Judging Panel are final and binding.
WVC and/or the Judging Panel reserves the right to disqualify any Entry that in its judgement violates the Eligibility or these Rules of the Competition.
WVC reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any Winning Team and/or Runner Up Team if a member of that team (i) may have a barrier to entry into the country of potential testing/prototyping, (ii) has a criminal record or pending criminal charges that may interfere with their ability to travel freely across international borders for the Awards, or (iii) does not otherwise meet WVC’s requirements with respect to participation in a WVC program of this nature.
If a Winning Team and/or Runner Up Team is disqualified, the Team forfeits its Award and WVC will be fully absolved of any and all liability in that regard. WVC reserves the right to select an alternate Winning Team and/or Runner Up Team who is able to meet the requirements as set out in these Rules.
Before being confirmed as a Finalist team, the Winning Team, or the Runner Up Team, each member (or, if under 19 years old, his/her parent/guardian) of such Team will be required to sign and return, within the time stipulated by WVC, a full release and indemnity form stating that he or she has read and understood the Rules, grants all consents required, authorizes WVC to broadcast, publish and disseminate his/her name, city of residence, photograph, likeness, and voice, in connection with the Competition and their participation if applicable in the Awards with no additional compensation payable to that individual, accepts participation in the Awards as offered, and releases WVC and related parties from any and all liability of any kind arising out of their participation in the Competition and the Awards, including any related travel. Proof of identification must be provided upon request.
USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
Awards must be accepted as awarded. Awards may not be sold or transferred, and is not convertible to cash.
All decisions of WVC with respect to any aspect of this Competition, including without limitation the eligibility of entries, are final and binding on all Teams.
All Teams are responsible for ensuring that any material they provide to WVC or post on the Online Challenge Platform Site, including but not limited to text, photographs, video and sound, does not violate the copyright, trademark, trade secret or any other personal or proprietary rights of any third party or is used with the permission of the owner(s) of such rights.
By submitting an Entry, each Team represents and warrants that it has all right, title and/or interest in the materials submitted and the information it contains is accurate and complete, and that by submitting the Entry the Team is not and will not be violating any contract or third party rights including any patent, copyright, trade secret, proprietary or confidentiality information, trade-mark, publicity or privacy right.
By entering this Competition, each member of each Team agrees to release, indemnify, discharge and hold harmless WVC, its affiliated organizations, and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives, from any claim or liability arising from or related to the Competition, and/or participation in the Awards.
WVC assumes no responsibility for garbled, lost, late, delayed, destroyed or misdirected mail, voice messages, e-mails or any computer errors or malfunctions.
WVC does not assume any responsibility for incorrect or inaccurate capture of entry information, technical malfunctions, human or technical error, seeding or printing errors, lost, delayed or garbled data or transmissions, omission, interruption, deletion, defect or failures of any telephone or computer line or network, computer equipment, software or any combination thereof.
If for any reason, in the opinion of WVC, in its sole discretion, the Competition is not capable of running as originally planned, or if the administration, security, fairness, integrity or the proper conduct of the Competition is corrupted or adversely affected, including by reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond its control, WVC reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify, amend, extend or suspend the Competition.
WVC reserves the right to modify the Rules without materially affecting the terms and conditions hereof. WVC reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the operation of the Competition or to be acting in violation of the Rules or otherwise in a disruptive manner.
Any attempt to deliberately damage the Competition website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Competition is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, WVC reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent of the law.
The Competition is subject to all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations.
In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Competition related materials, including but not limited to the Competition entry form, the Site or advertising in any media, the Rules shall govern.
